The Host compound 2,2? bis(1-hydroxy-4,5-dihydro-2,3:6,7-dibenzocycloheptatrien-1-yl)-biphenyl, H1, has been employed to discriminate between all the pairs of lutidine isomers. The preference for guest enclathration follows the sequence 3,4-LUT>2,4-LUT?3,5-LUT>2,5-LUT>2,3-LUT>2,6-LUT. This has been confirmed by guest-release endotherms measured by DSC. Four other diol host compounds, H2?H5, were tested on pairs of lutidine isomers which were poorly separated by H1.

Complexes that contain the [(Me3SiN-o-C6H4)2O]2- ligand ([1]2-) of the type [1]M(NMe2)2, [1]MCl2, and [1]MMe2 have been prepared where M=Ti, Zr, or Hf. Although cations prepared by addition of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] or [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)4] to [1]ZrMe2 or [1]HfMe2 could not be observed in NMR studies, addition of [(eta5-C5H4Me)2Fe][B(C 6H5)4] to [1]HfMe2 in the presence of THF led to isolation of {[1]HfMe(THF)2}[B(C6H5)4]. An X-ray study showed the cation to be a distorted octahedron in which the [1]2- ligand is in the mer arrangement and is significantly twisted from a planar NC2OC2N arrangement. The THF ligands are trans to one another. No well-behaved activity for the polymerization of 1-hexene could be observed with activated [1]ZrMe2, while {[1]HfMe(THF)2}[B(C6H5)4] was inactive. The reaction between Li2[O(o-C6H4NH)2] and Me2ClSiCH2CH2SiMe2Cl in THF produced a cyclic diamido/ether ligand H2[2]. The reaction between H2[2] and Zr(NMe2)4 or ZrR4 (R=CH2Ph, CH2SiMe3) gave [2]Zr(NMe2)2(HNMe2) and Zr[2]2, respectively. The dimethylamine in [2]Zr(NMe2)2(HNMe2) could be replaced with pyridine or 2,4-lutidine to give [2]Zr(NMe2)2(L) (L=pyridine or 2,4-lutidine), which then could be converted into [2]ZrCl2(L) with excess Me3SiCl. The reaction between [2]ZrCl2(py) and two equivalents of Me3SiCH2MgCl gave a bimetallic complex in which one of the trimethylsilyl methyl groups has been doubly C-H activated, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Positive ion mobility spectra for three compounds (2,4-dimethylpyridine (2,4-DMP, commonly called 2,4-lutidine), dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and 2,6-di-t-butyl pyridine (2,6-DtBP)) have been studied in air at ambient pressure over the temperature range 37-250C with (H2O) nH+ as the reactant ion. All three compounds yield a protonated molecule but only 2,4-dimethylpyridine and dimethyl methylphosphonate produced proton-bound dimers. The reduced mobilities (K 0) of protonated molecules for 2,4-dimethylpyridine and DMMP increase significantly with increasing temperature over the whole temperature range indicating changes in ion composition or interactions; however, K 0 for the protonated molecule of 2,6-di-t-butyl pyridine was almost invariant with temperature. The K0 values for the proton-bound dimers of 2,4-dimethylpyridine and DMMP also showed little dependence on temperature, but could be obtained only over an experimentally smaller and lower temperature range and at elevated concentrations. Chemical standards will be helpful as mobility spectra from laboratories worldwide are compared with increased precision and 2,6-di-t-butyl pyridine may be a suitable compound for use in standardizing reduced mobilities. The effect of thermal expansion of the drift tube length on the calculation of reduced mobilities is emphasized.

Reconciliation of standard entropies Delta0TSmo(cal) derived from calorimetric and thermophysical property studies with standard entropies Delta0TSmo(stat) derived with assigned vibrational spectra and the methods of statistical mechanics is used to demonstrate consistency between thermophysical properties for the six dimethylpyridines (Chemical Abstracts registry numbers: 2,3-dimethylpyridine, 583-61-9; 2,4-dimethylpyridine, 108-47-4; 2,5-dimethylpyridine, 589-93-5; 2,6-dimethylpyridine, 108-48-5; 3,4-dimethylpyridine, 583-58-4; 3,5-dimethylpyridine, 591-22-0). Properties considered include the critical temperature, critical pressure, vapor pressure, heat capacities of the solid and liquid, second and third virial coefficients, enthalpies of vaporization, vibrational assignment, and methyl group rotational barrier. The temperature-dependent properties are shown to be consistent over the entire temperature range from near T = 250 K to T = 650 K ( ? 0.95·Tc, where Tc denotes the critical temperature). The analyses validate the methods and results reported previously, which provided the information required to derive the temperature-dependent properties to near Tc, i.e. into the temperature and pressure range typical of petroleum processing conditions. Sensitivities of Delta0TSmo(stat) to errors in the vibrational assignment and to the size of methyl group rotational barriers are discussed. Vibrational assignments for vapor-phase fundamentals at low wave number for 2,3-dimethylpyridine and 3,4-dimethylpyridine are shown to be in error and are corrected.

This work demonstrates the application of a novel microwave induced plasma ionization (MIPI) source to ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). The MIPI source, called Surfatron, is composed of a copper cavity and a hollow quartz discharge tube. The ion mobility spectrum of synthetics air has a main peak with reduced mobility of 2.14 cm2V-1s-1 for positive ion mode and 2.29 cm2V-1s-1 for negative ion mode. The relative standard deviations (RSD) are 0.7% and 1.2% for positive and negative ion mode, respectively. The total ion current measured was more than 3.5 nA, which is much higher than that of the conventional 63Ni source. This indicates that a better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be acquired from the MIPI source. The SNR was 110 in the analysis of 500 pptv methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), resulting in the limit of detection (SNR = 3) of 14 pptv. The linear range covers close to 2.5 orders of magnitude in the detection of triethylamine with a concentration range from 500 pptv to 80 ppbv. Finally, this new MIPI-IMS was used to detect some volatile organic compounds, which demonstrated that the MIPI-IMS has great potential in monitoring pollutants in air.

A new metric is introduced for representing the molecular signature of atmospherically relevant organic compounds, the collision cross section quantity that is related to the structure and geometry of molecules and is derived from ion mobility measurements. By combination with the mass-to-charge ratio (im g iz ), a two-dimensional’g?im g iz space is developed to facilitate the comprehensive investigation of the complex organic mixtures. A unique distribution pattern of chemical classes, characterized by functional groups including amine, alcohol, carbonyl, carboxylic acid, ester, and organic sulfate, is developed on the 2-D ‘g?im g iz space. Species of the same chemical class, despite variations in the molecular structures, tend to situate as a narrow band on the space and follow a trend line. Reactions involving changes in functionalization and fragmentation can be represented by the directionalities along or across these trend lines, thus allowing for the interpretation of atmospheric transformation mechanisms of organic species. The characteristics of trend lines for a variety of functionalities that are commonly present in the atmosphere can be predicted by the core model simulations, which provide a useful tool to identify the chemical class to which an unknown species belongs on the ‘g?im g iz space. Within the band produced by each chemical class on the space, molecular structural assignment can be achieved by utilizing collision-induced dissociation as well as by comparing the measured collision cross sections in the context of those obtained via molecular dynamics simulations.
