Chemical profiling of liposoluble liquid smokes obtained from Eucalyptus wood tar: confirmation of absence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Liposoluble liquid smoke (LS) preparations are versatile food additives used worldwide. The objective of the present work was to characterise the chemical composition of four types of industrial liposoluble LS currently used as the basis for the production of commercial smoke flavourings. The LS was obtained by vacuum fractional distillation from a raw pyrolysis oil (raw LS) obtained primarily from eucalyptus wood tar. The raw LS and the four LS flavourings obtained therefrom were analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to characterise the main groups of components. Additional analyses were carried out to evaluate the occurrence of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in the samples, as the producer claimed that these samples are free of PAHs. The main chemical components characterised in the LS were organic acids, aldehydes, esters, furans, pyrans and phenols, with phenolic compounds being the major chemical group. For the four LS tested samples, no PAHs could be detected with the method employed, which could indicate that the industrial processing was able to effectively remove this harmful class of compounds, or at least decrease its concentrations to levels below the limits of detection of the method of analysis.

Parallel microwave-assisted synthesis of ionic liquids and screening for denitrogenation of straight-run diesel feed by liquid-liquid extraction

Fifty-six ionic liquids were efficiently synthesized in parallel format under one-pot, solvent-free microwaveassisted synthesis. These compounds were evaluated as extracting agents of nitrogen-containing compounds from a real Diesel feed before being submitted to the hydrodesulfurization process to obtain ultralow sulfur Diesel. Our results showed that halogenated ionic liquids are an excellent alternative due to these ionic liquids are relatively inexpensive, presenting a high selectivity for the extraction of nitrogen-containing compounds and can be regenerated and recycled.

Polynuclear Co(II) Myrtenates with 2,4-Lutidine

Abstract: The reaction of cobalt(II) chloride with potassium myrtenate (KMyr) followed by addition of 2,3-lutidine in ethanol gives the trinuclear compound [Co3(Myr)6(2,4-Lut)2] (I). The central cobalt(II) atom is linked to each of the two other metal atoms by three myrtenic acid anions. The reaction of a solution of compound I with lithium myrtenate (LiMyr) results in the formation of tetranuclear heterometallic complex [Li2-Co2(Myr)6(2,4-Lut)2] (II). Compound II is composed of two binuclear {LiCo(Myr)3(2,4-Lut)} moieties, in which the lithium(I) atoms are linked to cobalt(II) atoms by bridging myrtenate anions. The lithium atoms are connected by two oxygen atoms of acid anions. Compounds I and II were characterized by X-ray diffraction (CIF files CCDC nos. 1898096 (I), 1898097 (II)).

Structures of the silver complexes with lutidines according to the NMR data. Crystal structure of [AgNO3(3,5-Lut)2]

The silver(I) nitrate complexes with 2,3-, 2,4-, 2,6-, and 3,5-lutidine (Lut, dimethylpyridine C7H9N), [AgNO3(Lut) 2], are synthesized and studied by multinuclear NMR (1H, 13C, and 15N) in various solvents (chloroform, dimethyl sulfoxide, and acetonitrile). The influence of steric and electronic factors of the organic ligand on the parameters of the NMR spectra is revealed. It is shown that the 15N NMR spectra are the most informative. The structure of complex [AgNO3(3,5-Lut)2] is determined. The crystals are monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 14.599(1) A, b = 8.422(1) A, c = 12.954(1) A, beta = 99.60(1), V = 1570(2) A3, rhocalcd = 1.625 g/cm3, Z = 4. The structure is built of discrete neutral complexes [AgNO3(3,5-Lut)2]. The coordination mode of the Ag+ ion includes two nitrogen atoms of two crystallographically equivalent lutidine ligands (Ag-N 2.194(5) A, angle NAgN 147.6(3)). The nitrate ion behaves as a weak chelating ligand with respect to the Ag+ ion (Ag.O 2.674(6) A).

Oxyfunctionalization of pyridine derivatives using whole cells of Burkholderia sp. MAK1

Pyridinols and pyridinamines are important intermediates with many applications in chemical industry. The pyridine derivatives are in great demand as synthons for pharmaceutical products. Moreover, pyridines are used either as biologically active substances or as building blocks for polymers with unique physical properties. Application of enzymes or whole cells is an attractive strategy for preparation of hydroxylated pyridines since the methods for chemical synthesis of pyridinols, particularly aminopyridinols, are usually limited or inefficient. Burkholderia sp. MAK1 (DSM102049), capable of using pyridin-2-ol as the sole carbon and energy source, was isolated from soil. Whole cells of Burkholderia sp. MAK1 were confirmed to possess a good ability to convert different pyridin-2-amines and pyridin-2-ones into their 5-hydroxy derivatives. Moreover, several methylpyridines as well as methylated pyrazines were converted to appropriate N-oxides. In conclusion, regioselective oxyfunctionalization of pyridine derivatives using whole cells of Burkholderia sp. MAK1 is a promising method for the preparation of various pyridin-5-ols and pyridin-N-oxides.

Electron and Hydrogen Transfer Reductions of Some 2,4-Disubstituted Pyridines

New synthesis of 2,4-diacetylpyridine 1 was undertaken by Claisen condensation of 2,4-diethoxycarbonylpyridine 2a with ethyl acetate, followed by hydrolysis of the intermediate 3. Reduction of 1 with zinc or its salt in hydrochloric, formic or acetic acids afforded mixtures of the ketocarbinol 4 dicarbinol 5 or diethyl 6 pyridine derivatives. Formation of 6 as the complete reduction product was chemically proved to proceed via 4 and 5. Electrochemical reduction of 2a leads to 2,4-dimethylpyridine 7, and that of 1 gave rise to a mixture of 5 and 6 along with 2,4-diethyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine 8 and 2,4-diethylpiperidine 9. Finally, metal hydride reduction of 1 gave 5, and that of diesters 2 or diacid chloride 10 derivatives afforded 2,4-dihydroxymethylpyridine 11.

Palladium-Catalyzed Arylation of Benzylic C-H Bonds of Azaarylmethanes with Aryl Sulfides

Benzylic C-H arylation of azaarylmethanes with aryl sulfides has been developed by using a Pd-NHC catalyst and an amide base. Various azaarylmethanes and aryl sulfides were involved in the reaction to afford the corresponding diarylmethanes in good to excellent yields. Moreover, triarylmethane synthesis was accomplished through iterative arylations of 2- or 4-methylpyridine with two different aryl sulfides.
