Experimental analysis of waste polyurethane from household appliances and its utilization possibilities

Polyurethane has a good insulation characteristic, and it is widely used as an insulation and lining material for refrigerators. Nevertheless, at the end of a product’s lifetime, serious problems arise related to waste management. Recently, energy recovery has been marked as a promising solution, especially, waste-to-energy applications. To find an appropriate application for such waste, a thermal analysis was performed. An experimental analysis of polyurethane (PU)waste material was performed by the method of pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (Py-GC/MS)at various pyrolytic temperatures, namely, at 500, 600 and 700 C. Waste polyurethane foam was conducted to investigations in the form of a bulk sample and sorted grain-size samples with a goal to detect the chemical composition of the pyrolysate. The investigation revealed various groups of organic compounds such as heterocyclic compounds of nitrogen and simple and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, while notable concentrations of compounds containing chlorine were detected as well. The experimental analysis found differences in the composition of amines and other compounds and in the dependence on grain size composition. Bulk samples produced the highest concentration of amines (? 40%)at a temperature of 500 C. The sample homogenization led to a significant increase in amines production. Polyurethane waste of grain size from 0.125 to 0.25 mm contained approximately 80% amines. The pyrolysis of the bulk sample at 600 C yielded only 24% nitrogen heterocyclic compounds, while from the sorted grain-size <0.045 mm and 0.045?0.063 mm, yields were increased to 47.4 and 45.7%, respectively. Impact of landuse change on the molecular composition of soil organic matter

The conversion of grassland into cultivated land is a common agricultural practice, generally leading to the decrease of the soil organic matter (SOM) content. In this study, we analysed quantitative changes in carbon content. Additionally qualitative changes occurring in the soil organic matter composition on a molecular basis were assessed using Curiepoint pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (pyrolysis GC/MS). The aim of the study was to follow the development of SOM in grassland soil, after conversion into arable soil. Soil was sampled before the conversion (0 month) as well as 3 months, and 1 year after the conversion. The samples were treated with 10% HF to remove mineral material before being subjected to analysis of the bulk chemical composition by pyrolysis GC/MS. The relative contributions of single molecules were obtained by the integration of the total ion chromatogram. Pyrolysis products derived from lignins, proteins and polysaccharides were identified in all samples. SOM under grassland, arable land and converted grassland released similar pyrolysis products. Three months after the conversion, lignin-derived pyrolysis products were found at lower concentrations in the converted grassland soil. Principal component analysis showed that arable land, grassland and the converted grassland could be distinguished using the score plot of the 2nd and 3rd principal components. The differences induced by grassland conversion are only transitory and 1 year after the conversion, SOM has a similar composition as SOM of the initial grassland soil.

A review of the synthesis of quaternary acetylcholinesterase reactivators

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is well-known enzyme studied in many fields of research, e.g. in Alzheimer?s disease, Parkinson?s disease, or in eco-toxicology as a biological marker. Many inhibitors of AChE have been identified in nature as well as prepared in chemical labs as a result of systematic synthetic efforts. The organophosphorus (OP) inhibitors of AChE are one of the oldest artificial inhibitors being purposely developed as military nerve agents (e.g. sarin, soman, tabun, VX, RVX). Some of the compounds with decreased toxicity are currently used in agriculture as pesticides (e.g. para-thion, chlorpyrifos, paraoxon) or in the industry as softening agents and flame retardants. The common mechanism of action of all organophosphate compounds is the irreversible inhibition of AChE via a binding to the hydroxyl group of the serine residue within the active site of the enzyme. Subsequently, AChE loses its ability to fulfill its physiological role in cholinergic transmission, which leads to the cholinergic crisis with the possibility of respiratory failure and death. The reactivators of AChE are classified as strong nucleophilic agents capable to cleave the non-aged organophosphate-serine adduct and thereby restoring the activity of the enzyme. This work provides a unique overview of the most potent oximes reactivators of inhibited AChE since 1955 to the present. In this review article, we have reviewed different synthetic approaches of known and widely used oxime reactivators of AChE such as pralidoxime, methoxime, trimedoxime, obidoxime, asoxime (HI-6), HS-6, HLoe-7, K027, K048, K203, K075 and BI-6. The review covers the original articles as well as patented research.

Liquid Chromatographic Study of Solute Hydrogen Bond Basicity

The purpose of the present work was to investigate a liquid chromatographic method for the measurement of relative hydrogen bond basicities of dilute species. This type of determination cannot be done with conventional reversed-phase liquid chromatography due to the silanophilic interactions of basic solutes with the silica packing material. The studies were done on a polymeric stationary phase with pendant phenol groups that act as powerful hydrogen bond donors. Solute retention was evaluated in terms of two hydrogen bond basicity scales, beta2H and beta2C, and a steric hindrance parameter, Es. beta2H and beta2C are basicity scales based on the free energy of forming 1:1 hydrogen bond complexes and the retention on a strong hydrogen bond donor gas chromatographic phase, respectively. The Es parameter characterizes the steric effect experienced by the solute acceptor site. It is shown that retention correlates very strongly with beta2H and less strongly with beta2C. The log k? values need only two descriptive parameters, i.e., beta2H and Es, to give a good fit. As a whole, retention on the phenolic polymeric phase provides an efficient method for the measurement of relative hydrogen bond basicities.

Molecular characterization of alkyl nitrates in atmospheric aerosols by ion mobility mass spectrometry

We demonstrate the capability of the ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) for molecular characterization of reactive and short-lived alkyl nitrates (ANs) in atmospheric aerosols. We show significantly enhanced sensitivity towards the intact molecules of ANs by ultimately 2 orders of magnitude with the addition of inorganic anions such as chloride and nitrate to the negative electrospray to promote the ion adduct formation. This approach enables the measurement of ANs that have a low tendency to form molecular ions on their own with an improved limit of detection in the range of 0.1 to 4.3muM. Molecular identities of the ANs are well constrained by the developed correlation between the collision cross section and mass-to-charge ratio, which provides a two-dimensional separation of the ONO2-containing compounds on the basis of their molecular size and geometry. Structural information of the nitrate molecules is further probed by the identification of characteristic fragments produced from the collision-induced dissociation of parent AN adducts. Application of the IMS-MS technique is exemplified by the identification of hydroxy nitrates in secondary organic aerosols produced from the photochemical oxidation of isoprene.

Mutual solubility of water and pyridine derivatives

Regioselective CH bond activation on stabilized nitrogen ylides promoted by Pd(II) complexes: Scope and limitations

The orthopalladation of N-ylides [HxCyN-CHC-(O)Ar] (HxCyN = pyridine, benzylamine, imidazole, aniline, and phenylpyridine; Ar = aryl) has been studied. The incorporation of the Pd atom to these substrates is regioselective, since the orthopalladation is produced, in most of the cases, only at the aryl ring of the benzoyl group with concomitant C-bonding of the Nylide.
